ARISE Syllabus:
Responsibilities and Program Dates:
ARISE Scholars will begin meeting periodically for a total of eight sessions during the Spring 2005 semester; and will continue to meet throughout Summer Session I once per week.
ARISE is divided into two phases: Orientation (Spring 2005) and the Experiential Phase (Summer 2005 to Spring 2006).
During Orientation, students will attend Academic and Professional Development (APD) seminars periodically to begin enhancement of their summer learning experience. ARISE scholars will also make preparation for their internship and/or research project- obtaining a Faculty Sponsor to oversee their progress throughout the Experiential Phase and solidifying the internship placement. All internship and/or research projects are self-determined. Students have the opportunity to explore their own interests.
During the Experiential Phase, ARISE scholars may register for six (6) credits of academic course work,
internship credit or research credit. Moreover, students must attend two (2)
research seminars each week and complete weekly assignments to enhance their learning experience. Selected scholarship recipients may complete their ARISE experience as distance scholars outside the Syracuse metropolitan area. The experiential phase will allow each scholar to gain hands-on experience in his/her area of interest.
Support:
The scholarship covers tuition, enrichment activities, and/or provides a stipend to students.

Letters of Recommendation
We strongly suggest that one of the letters of recommendation be from a faculty member or advisor from the academic department in which the student is enrolled. The other letter should be from a person familiar with the scholar's academic background and/or involvement in campus/community activities. As students seek recommendations, they should begin the process of obtaining a Faculty Sponsor for their research and/or internship experience.
The letters should include the name and address of the person writing the recommendation and the capacity in which the individual knows the student.
Essay
Each applicant must submit a typewritten essay of at least two (2) but no more than three (3)
double-spaced pages. This personal statement should be submitted with your application.
The essay should include any specific goals and objectives you expect to achieve by participating
in the ARISE Academy. Your last name and consecutive page numbers should appear in the upper right hand corner of each page.
