ARISE Scholar: Nnemdi Baird

Duke University Summer Biomedical Science Institute

Nnemdi Baird The Minority Medical Entry Program (MMEP) at Duke University Summer Biomedical Science Institute is a six-week undergraduate summer program geared towards preparing minority students for medical school and the medical school application process. Students are offered an intense curriculum that parallels the academic and clinical environment in medical school. Through MMEP, I was exposed to pre-med science courses, a web-based curriculum that is now administered at many medical institutions, a comprehensive overview of contemporary issues within the health profession, clinical rotations, standardized patient care, seminars, career fairs, and a variety of social activities in the Durham area. Overall, the MMEP program confirmed my commitment to pursue a career in the medical field and has helped me to become a more confident, prepared and competitive student. This program was a valuable opportunity, which all pre-med students should experience. The curriculum of the program provides applicants with helpful strategies to assist in the admissions process and supplies them with ideas about what to expect in medical school.
