2002 ARISE Scholar: Shamarrah Broadus

User-Friendly Web Development with Rich Media Tools

Shamarrah Broadus As a Rich Media Development Intern at LeMoyne College, I had the opportunity to help in the design and creation of the Information Systems department web page. Rich media refers to elements on a web page that show dynamic motion over time or in response to user interaction. I gained experience in two design applications for web pages - Macromedia's Fireworks and Dreamweaver UltraDev. In Fireworks I gained experience in creating a control bar for the web page, which should be one of the first steps for every web page designer because it lets the designer know what pages the web site will have and what needs to be created. Utilizing my skills with Access, a database-driven application, I created six tables that would open from links on the web page: Curriculum, Course Offerings, Course Descriptions, Program Description, Faculty/Staff, and News/Events. Dreamweaver UltraDev was used to import the six tables from the Access database so that users- students, faculty/staff, parents, and prospective students-- can have easy access to information from the database. The system is also easy to use for the Information Systems staff, as tables are linked directly to the web site: for example, if a course is changed in the database of tables all they have to do is change the information in the table and it automatically changes in the Course Offerings table on the web site.
