I plan to study social defensiveness (a personality trait in which an individual goes to great lengths to present themselves as socially desirable) and negative affect (a tendency to experience negative emotions across time and situations) and how they interact to effect self reports of disease symptoms. Doctors often use self reports to diagnose and treat illness, so it is important to understand the underlying dynamics of how symptoms are reported to provide better diagnosis and care, and to minimize health care costs.
