The process of dying is as much a part of life as living itself. This summer I was involved in experiencing and examining Hospice care at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY. As a Hospice volunteer I was involved in awaiting the onset of death with my patients and their families. It was expected that in the Hospice environment individuals would be sad and despondent. It was further assumed that this atmosphere would prove difficult, particularly as it involved assisting patients to overcome their fears of dying. As a Hospice volunteer the first step in being trained or even considered for this position was the ability to converse about death and to accept death as a part of life. Through a specialized five week course involving hands-on training, I was equipped to proceed as a professional. Hospice care is a difficult subject to research, for the reason that the involvement in Hospice causes one to confront his or her own fears about death. For example through researching end of life care my own imaginary myths about how the dying process proceeds were uprooted. Pre-medical students who are sincere about pursuing a career in medicine should take into consideration volunteering at a Hospice program, as hospice care exercises the art of compassion which has nearly been omitted from the field of medicine.
