The MOST: A Valuable Resource that is Vastly Underutilized
After 20 years in Syracuse, the MOST remains a valuable resource that is vastly underutilized. To see how the museum might increase public awareness of its services, census data was used to locate comparable cities. Once these were found, the local science museums and the amenities within them were researched. Community surveys were conducted by the museum to see how they were addressing the consumer's needs. Conducting on site research assessed the museums' daily operations. Research revealed that: 1) the residents of comparable cities are located within one hour of metropolitan cities that feature all-inclusive science facilities; 2) direct competitors are non-existent; 3) the market is relatively small due to the regions population; and 4) the target audience represents household of 2 adults with 1 - 2 children under 18, with income between $30,000 - $90,000. This suggests that if the museum can enhance its current advertising strategy, relative increases in public knowledge about the facility might be demonstrated. The museum has a competitive advantage that it is not capitalizing on, and at this point in time it is unclear on where the museums' future lies.
